TIDE STAR IN TOWN TO DIRECT YOUTH CLINIC: by Johnny
WEST POINT - Cullman
County had the opportunity to be treated by a pair of former
All-Americans from the Southeastern Conference Monday during a youth
sports clinic at West Point
Football Stadium. Former Tide defensive back Jeremiah
Castille was in charge of the S.W.A.T.S Sports Performance Camp with
assistance from former Auburn University track star Willie Smith.
The camp was held for youths from the ages of 8 to 18 as 27
people representing such areas as Cullman, West Point, Good Hope,
Vinemont and Holly Pond spent four hours with the pair in developing
speed and agility. The Castille Foundation has teamed with S.W.A.T.S
(Sports With Alternatives to Steroids) and has conducted in the last
couple of months at locations in Gadsden, Anniston, Oxford, Briarwood
Christian in Birmingham with one remaining on the schedule in
Fultondale on Aug. 2.
S.W.A.T.S is associated
across the country with some of top athletes in a variety of sports
such as MLB star Johnny Damon of the Yankees, the spokesperson for
professional baseball with S.W.A.T.S, former Alabama defensive back Sam
Shade, former Oklahoma and NFL running back Greg Pruitt, Castille,
Smith, former Auburn track star Harvey Glance (US Track asistant with
the '08 Olympics) and others in sports administration such as Pat Ivey
with the University of Missouri. Mitch Ross serves as the
Founder of The S.W.A.T.S Program, a strength and conditioning coach and
specialist in nutrition.
Castille spoke with Sportspage in between a break in the clinic's first
hour as he reflected on his great career playing for the legendary Paul
"Bear" Bryant at Alabama then getting a chance to play in the secondary
of the Denver Broncos in the National Football League.
Castille was on the final Alabama team that Bryant coached in 1982,
snapping a three-game losing streak with a 21-15 victory in the Liberty
Bowl on a cold December night in Memphis.
The All-SEC performer has a connection now with Cullman County as his
oldest son Tim recently married former Hanceville and Alabama
basketball standout Dee Merriweather.
Smith, an All-American in
track at Auburn in the 70s and an Olympic sprinter with a gold medal in
the 1984 Games in Los Angeles, displayed his ability with speed and
agility in which he has a training available in a couple of locations
nearby.
Ross
has spoken about S.W.A.T.S on such programs as the Paul Finebaum Show
during June and other places across the South and in the East.
He was on Channel 2 recently to help promote the camp and is a firm
believer about going about it the right way in training to be the best
an athlete can be and stay away from a growing problem of steroids and
illegal performance enhancing substances that have rocked the sports
world with plenty of negative stories from the problems that have
surfaced in track and field to those who play Major League Baseball and
have taken an illegal performance enhancing product.
Ross and his staff are
developing products and technolgoies along with conditioning clinics
from Castille and Smith to try and offset the illegal steriod
usage outbreak.
